The strategic adoption of modular design offers a powerful solution to control these costs without sacrificing functionality or customization.
The core principle is to design your product using a library of standardized, pre-engineered sub-assemblies or modules. This shifts procurement from unique, one-off parts to repeatable, validated components. From a sourcing perspective, this means you can consolidate orders for these modules across product lines, achieving better pricing and minimum order quantities (MOQs). It simplifies supplier selection, allowing you to partner with specialists in specific module types rather than searching for a factory to build an entirely unique item from scratch.
Practical implementation requires close collaboration between your engineering and procurement teams. Start by analyzing your product portfolio to identify common functions or parts. Can a specific sensor mount, electrical enclosure, or mechanical actuator be standardized?
