BASF Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Expansion and Operation of DMAPA and Polyetheramine Production Units at Nanjing Site

On October 16, BASF Coatings Chemicals (Nanjing) Co., Ltd. celebrated the expansion and tenth anniversary of operations for its 3-(dimethylamino)propylamine (DMAPA) and polyetheramine (PEA) production units. With the expanded facility now operational, BASF's Nanjing site has nearly doubled its annual DMAPA production capacity and increased PEA capacity by approximately 25%.

Since 2023, BASF has switched the entire portfolio of amine products manufactured at its Nanjing site to 100% renewable electricity. This includes, in addition to DMAPA and PEA, tert-butylamine (tBA), n-octylamine (NOA), and 1,2-propanediamine (1,2-PDA). Compared to the base year 2020, this transition reduces around 9,800 metric tons of CO? emissions annually—equivalent to lowering the average product carbon footprint across the full range of amine products at the Nanjing site by about 4%. Thanks to this change, customers can reduce their Scope 3 emissions without altering their own processes.

DMAPA is a key building block for producing betaines used in mild liquid soaps, shampoos, and dishwashing detergents. It is also applied in water treatment, as well as in manufacturing crop protection products, lubricant additives, polyurethane foams, and epoxy resin curing agents. Following the expansion, BASF's global annual DMAPA production capacity has increased by more than 20%, reaching 85,100 metric tons, reinforcing its position as one of the world's leading DMAPA producers.

Yao Yajing, Vice President and Head of Amines, Acetylenes & Carbonyls Derivatives Management at BASF Intermediates Asia Pacific, said: "As one of the world's largest amine producers, switching amine production at our Nanjing site to 100% renewable electricity marks another step forward in our sustainability journey. By reducing carbon emissions, we enhance the competitiveness of both BASF and our regional customers, moving closer to becoming the preferred sustainable intermediates partner for our customers."

Michael Becker, Senior Vice President and Head of Intermediates Asia Pacific at BASF, said: "Over the past decade, close collaboration with our customers has been key to our success. This expansion further strengthens our responsiveness and ability to provide reliable supply and high-quality products, laying a solid foundation to meet the growing demands of our customers across the Asia Pacific region.
