FiRa Consortium Launches FiRa Core 4.0 Specification and Certification Program
FiRa? Consortium has announced the launch of its Core 4.0 specifications, marking a significant milestone in the development of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. These updates enhance relevant features defined by IEEE 802.15.4-2024 to meet various application scenarios outlined by FiRa. They also strengthen FiRa's capabilities, enabling seamless interoperability and unlocking new possibilities for precise and secure ranging and positioning across diverse applications.
Features of the FiRa Core 4.0 Specifications and Certification Program
The FiRa Core 4.0 specifications include updates that support expanded functionalities and the continuous growth of the ecosystem.
- UL-TDoA—This feature supports infrastructure-based tracking of assets (UL-TDoA tags) using UL-TDoA location anchors. The design ensures interoperability between tags and infrastructure, optimizes tag simplicity and power efficiency, and offers flexible deployment options for easy customization.
- Ranging Suspension—a method to suspend Two-Way Ranging (TWR) measurements while maintaining synchronization between a controlled device and controller, allowing for rapid reconnection when resuming sessions.
- Support for Aliro UWB in UCI—Updates to the UCI specification to enable testing of Aliro UWB features as defined by the Connectivity Standards Alliance.
- Other improvements, extensions, and maintenance updates to the specifications.
FiRa Core Certification Program 4.0—A Flexible Path to Interoperability
The FiRa Core Certification Program uses a modular design, allowing devices to independently certify specific features. The newly launched FiRa Core Certification Program 4.0 introduces UL-TDoA certification and fully incorporates Aliro UWB functionality into the certification scope.

The Core Certification Program 4.0 provides interoperability assurance for FiRa-enabled devices, driving adoption and innovation across industries. Covering PHY, MAC, link layer, and interoperability testing, the program further strengthens FiRa’s position within the IoT ecosystem.
