Greece calls on EU to regulate low-cost cross-border parcels

Recently, a large number of low-cost packages from Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Shein and Temu have entered Greece, with daily orders reaching up to 50,000, accounting for 15%-20% of Greece's e-commerce market. 91% of low-value cross-border parcels in the EU originate from China, amounting to 4.6 billion in 2024 and expected to rise to 6 billion in 2025. Local Greek businesses bear tax and compliance costs, while cross-border parcels enjoy tax exemptions, creating unfair competition that causes Greece annual losses exceeding 180 million euros. The EU plans to impose a €3 tariff starting July 2026, and Greece is calling for a unified mechanism, including possible restrictions on e-commerce from third countries if necessary.
