When sourcing pressure sensors for hazardous chemical production lines, the Chinese market offers a broad range of intrinsically safe (Ex ia) and explosion-proof (Ex d) instruments. However, not all suppliers are equal in terms of certification, quality consistency, and export reliability. For American and global buyers, the key is to identify manufacturers that hold internationally recognized certifications (ATEX, IECEx, or at least NEPSI) and have proven experience in chemical, petrochemical, and pharmaceutical applications.

For any hazardous chemical line, the selection process must go beyond price. Start by defining your area classification (Zone 0, 1, or 2) and gas group (IIA, IIB, IIC). Then verify that the sensor's intrinsic safety parameters (Ui, Ii, Pi, Ci, Li) match your safety barrier. Also, confirm the process wetted materials are compatible with your chemical media—316L stainless steel is common, but Hastelloy or tantalum may be needed for high-corrosion services.
When importing from China, always request a pre-shipment inspection and a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer. For ATEX or IECEx items, the certificate must list the specific model number and the notified body. Also, check the lead time—customized explosion-proof sensors typically take 3-6 weeks, and sea freight adds 30-45 days to the US. Plan your spare parts inventory accordingly, and always order a few spare sensors to avoid downtime.
On the maintenance side, intrinsically safe systems require regular verification of the safety barrier and loop integrity. Explosion-proof (Ex d) enclosures must be properly sealed when opened, and any gasket damage can void the certification. Train your maintenance team on the difference between 'intrinsically safe' and 'explosion-proof'—they are not interchangeable. Intrinsically safe sensors limit energy, while explosion-proof sensors contain an explosion. For chemical lines, many engineers prefer intrinsically safe because it allows live maintenance without de-energizing the loop.
Finally, establish a supplier qualification checklist: visit the factory if possible, ask for customer references in chemical processing, and request a sample for a 30-day trial in a non-critical location. Verify that the supplier has a local service partner or at least remote diagnostic support. In the long run, the cheapest sensor is often the most expensive if it fails in a hazardous area.
