Protection against electric shock—both direct and indirect—must comply with IEC 60364-4-41, typically achieved through automatic disconnection of supply, insulation, or protective equipotential bonding. For machinery, IEC 60204-1 mandates emergency stop functions, proper grounding, and clear labeling of live parts. All installations should undergo initial verification and periodic inspection per IEC 60364-6.

Important cautions: Never operate equipment with damaged enclosures, exposed conductors, or missing protective covers. Always de-energize circuits before inspection or repair—verify absence of voltage using a calibrated tester and apply Lockout/Tagout (LOTO). Avoid overloading circuits beyond their design capacity. Do not install equipment in environments exceeding its IP rating or thermal class. Ensure residual current devices (RCDs) and circuit breakers are correctly coordinated and tested regularly. Unauthorized modifications to control logic or bypassing of safety interlocks are strictly prohibited.

Maintenance tips: Conduct visual inspections quarterly for signs of overheating (discoloration, burnt smell), loose connections, corrosion, or moisture ingress. Perform thermographic scans annually on high-load components like busbars and terminals. Test insulation resistance and earth continuity at least once a year using calibrated instruments. Clean dust and debris from ventilation openings to prevent overheating. Keep documentation updated—including single-line diagrams, test records, and modification logs. Replace aging components (e.g., capacitors, contactors) proactively based on manufacturer life expectancy or condition monitoring data. Only use spare parts approved by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
