Definition
An ultracapacitor, EDLC (Electric Double Layer Capacitor) or Supercapacitor, is an electrical energy storage device that shows electrical characteristics different from those of batteries or traditional electrolytic capacitors. The electric energy is stored in the electric double layer from charge separation which is electrostatic force between an ionically conducting electrolyte and a conducting electrode. The ions displaced in forming the Double Layers are transferred between the electrodes by diffusion through the electrolyte. The capacitance is depend on the electrode material such as surface area, pore size and pore size distribution. The stored energy has electric chemical characteristics ,not include chemical reaction, which are high efficiency of charge and discharge and rapid speed of charge and discharge and long cycle life of charge and discharge.

Applications for Supercapacitor (Ultracapacitor or EDLC)
Backup Power
Video record, TV satellite receiver : backup of TV-channel setting, recording times, clock time
Car audio system, taxi meter : backup of radio station memory, taxi fare programs while battery is disconnected
Alarm clock radio, process controllers, home bakery, coffee machines : protects clocks and program functions from getting lost in case of temporary power outage.
Photo and Video cameras, pocket calculators : the backup is provided during the replacement of the batteries.
Toys, Electric tooth brush : quick charge motor drive through quick charge
TV-Remote controllers : combine power generator with charging circuit to insert into the body with supercapacitor.
Fail-safe positioning : provides the power for open or close positioning in case of power failures.
Starter applications : the pulse power for starting in diesel locomotives. It allows to start the diesel engine at very low temperature(Siberia)
Alternating Power
- Solar street light : During the day the electric load is supplied by solar cells, which also recharge the Supercapacitor.
- Solar watch : After being completely charged It may feed the watch for several days. The watch does not need any battery replacement during its lifetime.
- Solar lanterns, road marking lanterns, lighting of time-table at bus stop, illumination of parking meters traffic warning signals : combination of solar panels
