First up, researchers at Cornell University have developed a framework called BeyondMimic, which enables humanoid robots to track and adapt to complex, fluid motions. Moving beyond repetitive tasks like lifting and walking, the humanoid robot can perform tasks such as dancing and even backflips, all of which were learned by translating motion data into a robotic policy without requiring specific, pre-programmed routines. Check out this video to watch the robot perform complex motion tracking.
The iconic candy, the Tootsie Roll, is celebrating over a century of continuous production with a recipe that has barely changed. A key to maintaining the classic chew and flavor of the 65 million-plus rolls produced each day is the "seed batch” tradition, where a small portion of the previous day’s batch is blended into each new one. Learn more in our write-up about the blend of tradition and automation in Tootsie Roll’s production.
Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works completed the first test flight of its X-59 quiet supersonic aircraft, moving a step closer to making high-speed flight over land viable again. The X-59 is specifically engineered to reduce the traditional disruptive sonic boom to a much quieter "gentle thump,” which is crucial for overcoming current regulations. Read the full article for more on the mission to redefine supersonic travel.
In maritime news, Leidos has unveiled its Sea Dagger Commando Insertion Craft concept — a medium surface craft developed for the U.K.’s Royal Navy. Designed to exceed 40 knots (approximately 46 mph), the vessel integrates speed, long-range capabilities, and high-tech sensors. Watch our video coverage to see the Sea Dagger in action.
Finally, Electra, a startup focused on low-temperature iron processing, has announced the location of its demonstration plant in suburban Denver and secured significant purchase agreements. The company’s patented, electrified process converts iron ore into pure iron at lower temperatures than conventional methods. Head over to our article to learn more about this path to reducing emissions in the iron and steel industries.
