BASF's New Automotive Coatings Production Facility Starts Operations in Münster, Germany

On November 11, BASF Coatings announced the successful commissioning of a new state-of-the-art automotive OEM coatings production facility at its Münster site in Germany. Designed to produce best-selling products, this facility meets demand for mainstream colors that dominate today's automotive coatings market, while ensuring consistent product quality and high production efficiency.

This investment marks another significant milestone for BASF Coatings, further strengthening its long-term competitiveness in high-volume coatings. The new facility features a high degree of automation, enabling more sustainable operations and ensuring exceptional process stability and reliability.

The newly constructed facility is one of the most transformative investments made by BASF Coatings in the past five years. From initial concept planning in 2019 through two-and-a-half years of construction to its official launch today, the project’s success reflects the deep expertise and experience of the BASF Coatings team.

Uta Holzenkamp, President of BASF Coatings, said: “Our innovation strength and relentless pursuit of excellence have made us an industry leader—and more importantly, the preferred partner our customers trust. The completion of this facility is an outstanding team achievement and a prime example of close collaboration across BASF Coatings’ global network of experts.”

Nils Lessmann, Senior Vice President of Global Coatings and Resins Operations at BASF, said: “We’ve applied more advanced production processes in this new facility to ensure excellent and consistent product quality. This allows our customers to benefit even more from our technical expertise and accumulated know-how. Going forward, we will extend these best practices to the Asia-Pacific and North America regions, enhancing our global production network.”

The new facility will also optimize energy consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, marking another crucial step forward in BASF Coatings’ sustainability journey. Since 2022, the Münster site has been fully powered by renewable wind energy, reducing CO? emissions by approximately 4,000 tons annually. Today, the Münster site joins other BASF Coatings production sites across Europe, Asia-Pacific, and North America in operating entirely on renewable electricity.
