DIC Corporation Establishes Industry’s First HACCP-Compliant Coatings Plant in Indonesia

Tokyo, Japan – DIC Corporation (DIC), a global leader in ink production, has announced the establishment of a new coating production facility within its wholly-owned subsidiary PT. DIC Graphics in Jakarta, Indonesia. This facility is designed to produce coatings suitable for direct contact with food materials and is the world’s first such facility operated by an ink manufacturer following the globally recognized Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) guidelines. (Based on DIC's own analysis; the facility has applied for HACCP certification.) Thus, it establishes a food safety management system comparable to that of conventional food producers.

The new facility aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 1,000 tons by fiscal year 2030. Its products will be supplied to markets in China, other Asian countries, and Oceania, supporting the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions. The plant is equipped with specialized configurations such as air showers, High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, and antibacterial flooring to ensure superior safety and quality for food-contact materials. It has also received halal certification compliance in Indonesia and meets the World Health Organization’s Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) standards for pharmaceuticals and food products.

New Production Facility Overview:

With the acceleration of the global circular economy, reducing plastic use and shifting towards reusable materials have become urgent priorities. Traditional food packaging often combines plastic films with substrates to provide water and oil resistance, making recycling difficult. DIC’s high-performance coatings can be applied to films and paper substrates, imparting necessary performance characteristics and enabling the development of highly recyclable mono-material packaging.

This new facility represents DIC Group’s first dedicated food-contact coatings production site outside Japan in Asia, marking a significant step in enhancing its competitiveness in the global sustainable packaging market. Promoting circular economy initiatives is central to DIC’s long-term management plan, DIC Vision 2030, which identifies sustainable packaging as a key business area.

Product Line at the New Facility:

The new facility primarily produces high-performance coatings for paper, including brands like HYDRECT® and SunStar DFC OPV/coatings. These coatings are used to develop both food-contact inner coatings and non-food-contact outer coatings, offering waterproof, oil-resistant, and sealing properties without compromising recyclability. Applications range from cardboard meal boxes and pizza boxes to burger wrapping papers and paper cups, providing innovative solutions for the food packaging industry.

Through this investment, DIC aims to localize the production of high-performance products originally developed in Europe, America, and Japan, thereby fostering the growth of sustainable packaging markets in Asia and Oceania.
