Musk: Neuralink to Begin "Mass Production" of Brain-Computer Interface Devices in 2026

On December 31, 2025, American entrepreneur Elon Musk announced on social media that his brain-computer interface (BCI) company, Neuralink, will commence "mass production" of its neural implant devices in 2026. He also revealed the company is transitioning to a "more streamlined and nearly fully automated surgical procedure."

Musk highlighted a key technical advancement: the device’s ultra-thin electrode threads will now be inserted directly through the dura mater—the protective membrane surrounding the brain—without requiring its removal. “This is a significant development,” he noted.

Neuralink performed its first human implant on January 28, 2024. As of September 2025, 12 individuals worldwide have received the Neuralink device, collectively accumulating over 2,000 days of use—equivalent to more than 15,000 hours of real-world operation.

Recently, the company reported that clinical trial participants have successfully extended their control beyond digital interfaces to physical devices, such as assistive robotic arms. Over time, Neuralink plans to further expand the range of external devices that can be operated directly via thought using its BCI platform.
