A machine—defined as an assembly of linked parts or components, at least one of which moves, with a specific application such as processing, handling, or packaging—must be designed, operated, and maintained to ensure functional reliability while minimizing risks to operators, bystanders, and the environment. Safety is not an add-on but an integral aspect of mechanical design governed by hierarchical risk reduction principles.

Key parameters to note: Compliance with ISO 12100 is foundational—it mandates a three-step risk assessment process: (1) inherent safe design (e.g., eliminating sharp edges), (2) safeguarding (e.g., fixed guards, interlocks), and (3) information for use (e.g., warnings, manuals). Electrical systems must meet IEC 60204-1, requiring emergency stop circuits (Category 0 or 1), proper grounding, overcurrent protection, and control reliability. Lubricate moving parts per OEM schedule using specified grades—over-lubrication can attract contaminants. Calibrate sensors (proximity switches, pressure transducers) and safety devices (light curtains, E-stops) quarterly using traceable standards. Replace worn wear parts (bearings, seals, cutting tools) before failure occurs—monitor via condition-based indicators like temperature rise or acoustic emission. Keep electrical enclosures sealed and clean; dust buildup causes overheating and short circuits. Maintain a logbook recording all interventions, part replacements, and safety system validations. After any modification or repair, perform a full functional safety check before returning to service. Store spare parts in dry, labeled containers to avoid mix-ups.
