Safe deployment requires strict compliance with functional safety standards, robust battery management systems (BMS), and disciplined maintenance protocols to prevent thermal runaway, fire, or explosion.

Key parameters to note: Safety certification must align with application context: IEC 62133-2 governs portable sealed secondary lithium cells (e.g., for power tools), while UL 2580 and ISO 12405 series apply specifically to traction batteries in EVs. ISO 12405-2 mandates rigorous safety tests including crush, nail penetration, external short circuit, overcharge (to 1.5× rated voltage), and thermal shock (−40°C to +85°C cycling). UL 2580 adds requirements for enclosure integrity, coolant leakage resistance, and post-crash electrical isolation.
